God’s Creative Force

Psalm 147:15 He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly. 16 He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes. 17 He casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold?

God’s awesome creative power is still on display in the earth.  He shapes and reshapes the land masses through continental drift.  We know the continents rest upon giant earth-plates that are in constant slow motion.  This motion is in different directions.  Where plate borders meet, it is called a fault line.  When one land mass attempts to squeeze past another, the stress release is an earthquake.  And volcanic activity is on display along these fault lines.  There is a “ring of fire” along these lines where volcanoes often erupt to change the land mass and to create new islands in the oceans or to sink them into underwater calderas.

There is also the power of ice which needs to be considered.  Ice power is AWESOME!  Ice ages tend to sculpt the land and create valleys, mountains and lakes and rivers.  The power of ice is extreme.  The last ice age had a glacial cover over much of North America.  It slowly receded and carved out what we see today as the topography of the USA.  The Great Lakes are remnants of the last ice age.  There is a weak zone in the North American plate which nearly split it in two along what is now the Mississippi River valley.  So the Mississippi Valley is subject to earthquakes in this weakened part of the North American plate.  Remnants of the ice cover are found at the polar regions of the earth where the ice can be miles thick over the land in some places.  The northern ice cover is of interest because it is affected by global warming.  Huge chunks of ice break off each year and melt causing a quickened recession of the pack ice.  Global warming is also causing some of the world’s mountains to lose their snowy peaks.  All this raises the available water levels of the oceans.  More water is available to form clouds and increase the volume and amount of rain falling in rainy seasons.  More water run off into rivers in turn cause more flooding than normal after spring thaws.  As a result of more intense snowfall and rain this year in North America the Mississippi River is inundated with increased volumes of water from its tributaries.  It is flooding downstream from Illinois to New Orleans.  The earth ecosystem is an organ and the parts are linked.  Stress in one area has a domino effect in the whole system.  A weakened ozone layer leads to more solar radiation reaching the planet.  This tends to warm the planet and a warmer planet tends to accelerate ice thaw.  Add to that what man is doing by polluting the air through industrial activity, automobiles and burning carbon fuels for heating.  What a mess we are making.

The question is who can stand before His ice and cold.  Dinosaurs could not withstand it, neither could wooly mammoths withstand it.  Their skeletons can still be found in rock and permafrost by geologists today.  The ice and cold is a bit too much for most human beings.  Therefore they migrated from colder climes to warmer areas more suitable for planting and hunting for food.  A few brave people like the Inuit tribes still eke out a living in the northern polar region.  These few people answer the question, “Who can stand before His cold”?

The ecosystems God created for the planet, Earth, are still at work.  The continents are still moving along the earth plates; land mass is renewed by volcanic ejections and new islands are being formed.  Glacial ice still forms and recedes although human activity has affected glacial calving.  Men have caused depletion of the ozone layer that protects the earth from more harmful solar radiation.  This along with human activity is causing the annual earth temperature to rise.  This accelerates glacial melting which in turn increases the volume of water n the oceans.  Warm and cold currents of ocean waster regulate wind and weather patterns on earth.  We are in a “la nina” weather phase right now.  We have had more violent earthquakes than usual with bad tsunamis and tornadoes also.  Coastlines and beaches are eroding away and shrinking as the water volume rises.  Man does not want to stand before His cold.  And if we keep doing what we do to the environment, who can say what extreme weather changes will be “our fault”.

Glorify God!
God did it!
